On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. This year the theme for International Day of the Girl Child is innovation through education one amazing celebrity who has been stepping up and making a difference is Katy Perry who teamed up with UNICEF to promote this special day of awareness! Perry traveled to Madagascar to learn more about the lives of the less fortunate young ladies whose lives she wants to improve.
“In less than one week here in Madagascar, I went from crowded city slums to the most remote villages and my eyes were widely opened by the incredible need for a healthy life — nutrition, sanitation, and protection against rape and abuse — which UNICEF are stepping in to help provide,” said Perry in a statement. The music star went on to say, “I am grateful to UNICEF for giving me the opportunity to see first-hand how their programs make a real difference in children’s lives. Support for UNICEF is saving children, I am a witness to it.” It is definitely incredible to see a pop star of Katy’s status stepping up and trying to make a difference in the world!
While Katy’s service trip to Madagascar has likely inspired thousands of fans to participate in charitable causes in their own way, the sky is the limit when it comes to ways YOU can start changing the lives of girls in the world. In a recent publication on UNICEF.com authors shared “While there has been significant progress in improving girls’ access to education over the last two decades, many girls, particularly the most marginalized, continue to be deprived of this basic right.“
