Take one step into the Victoria & Albert’s Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion exhibition and you will be overwhelmed by the sequins, bows, feathers and artistic fabulousness of Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. Featuring over 100 pieces crafted by “the master” of couture, the exhibit examines the work and legacy of this influential designer and his protégées. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion celebrates the power of art, fashion and design and will leave you in a blissful state of awe.
The exhibition excites guests with its spotlight on the creativity and depth of craftsmanship involved in couture. The extensive archive of Balenciaga gowns is highlighted by X-ray prints that showcase the inner workings of the complex couture pieces. This juxtaposition teaches viewers that couture involves so much more than what meets the eye. The way the gowns are displayed gives new life to the way the fabric has been manipulated and helps viewers understand the important interior and exterior details. The gowns in the exhibit are a testament to the artistic nature of Cristóbal’s work as the designer’s revolutionary shapes such as the sack, tunic and shift dress are all on display. Each design evokes wonder and awe and make it impossible to argue that fashion is not a very special and magical form of art.
The exhibit is on display in London until February and is a must!
