Up-and-coming Canadian fashion designer Travis Taddeo only emerged onto the fashion scene in 2008 after launching his eponymous line Travis Taddeo. However, based on his spring/summer 2013 Ready-to-Wear collection shown this past Friday at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto, he is well on his way to fashion stardom.
The collection featured both men’s and women’s wear and was inspired by azulejo tiles, which are cultural Portuguese ceramics found on everything from palaces to subways. Each garment in the collection was minimalistic, edgy and so on trend for the upcoming season. “This collection focuses on trademark jerseys and clean cuts suited for our independent clientele, all the while remaining true to our vision, which is to create classic designs with a minimalistic edge,” said Taddeo who aimed to portray the juxtaposition of pleasure and pain through clothing in his most recent collection.
The show opened with a black loose-fitting dress with side slits (pictured in the lower left corner in the image above). Instantly, it becomes obvious that this collection will be filled with casual yet super luxe street wear reminiscent of Taddeo’s notion that there is a strong architectural balance between non-conforming, minimalist figures and edgy high fashion designs. What happened on the runway next can best be described as a marriage of rough and tough bad boy/girl attire and floaty, relaxed get-ups — all perfectly complimentary.
The collection featured a range of fabrics including fibrous linen, fine Japanese leather, edgy denims and breathable jerseys (a signature Travis Taddeo material) — all perfect fabrics for the hotter season. Color wise, Taddeo stuck to bold hues such as chic blacks, crisp whites, tropical ceruleans and airy silvers. Both the men’s and women’s wear was stylish and edgy, showcasing a range of unique design features including knots, slits and zipper details. Overall, the pieces in this collection lend themselves to nearly any occasion from summer internship to chic Caribbean getaway.
However, what made this collection extra special for Taddeo was the fact that it marked the coveted launch of his men’s footwear collection under the prestigious ALDO RISE Program (a program which gives young designers the tools they need to succeed and helps them turn their biggest dreams into reality). Taddeo is the first Canadian designer to launch a footwear collection through the program and is grateful for the opportunities he has been exposed to. After all, what up-and-coming designer wouldn’t want to team up with ALDO’s design department to create four drop dead gorgeous pairs of shoes? The shoes Taddeo designed with ALDO are sleek, sophisticated and fashion forward, while still being lightweight, versatile and ever-comfortable. We’re crossing our fingers his designs will be picked up by ALDO stores in the near future.
Edgy, modern and oh so high fashion, Travis Taddeo’s spring/summer 2013 Ready-to-Wear collection was definitely a success from head to toe. Everything about Taddeo’s slouchy yet sophisticated garments for women to his out-there bright blue bodysuits and leather shorts for men were highly fashion forward. Can’t wait to see Taddeo’s clothing hit the streets come spring 2013!
